A conservatory is a big investment for your property, and as such it needs looking after to maintain its value.

Modern conservatories make use of energy efficient materials and techniques and will often be better insulated than the rest of your home, especially in older properties. To reduce any condensation, particularly during cold and wet weather you should try to keep your conservatory well ventilated. Opening windows and doors can help, but isn’t always an option during bad weather, but provided there is an airflow than condensation is unlikely to be a problem.
In new conservatories it is important to keep it well ventilated for the first few months, as even with the most energy efficient conservatories, moisture from the air and building process itself can require a drying-out period. This is especially important if your conservatory is installed during winter or wet weather. An important tip with a new conservatory is not to clean the glass for the first few weeks, since you may inadvertently damage the glazing sealant before it fully sets.
Many SolarFrame conservatories are fitted with a SolarFrame solid tiled roof which helps to retain warmth in colder months, and to keep the conservatory cooler in hot weather. The external of the conservatory is naturally going to need the most work, being exposed to the elements means it has to endure whatever the British weather throws at it.
With much of a conservatory being made of glass the obvious thing is to clean the glass in much the same way as you would do the rest of your home. It is recommended that you should clean your conservatory between 2-4 times a year, depending on your surroundings you may want to consider doing so more regularly, or after any particularly severe weather. Try not to neglect your conservatory through winter, keeping up your maintenance plan and keeping it in use will help to ensure that come summer your conservatory is in its best condition still.
- Remove any debris from the drainpipes and gutters
- Sweep the roof to help remove any of moss or algae, and help prevent against its growth (there are a number of mould removing solutions available on the market if needed)
- Clean the windows, much as you would do for the rest of your house
- Remember to clean the frame itself as well as the windows
Ensuring you maintain your conservatory will help to prevent against any damage over time. Household cleaning products are often sufficient for the job. It is advised not to use a power washer or similar hose as although conservatories are build to be waterproof, the concentrated blast of water could be enough in some cases to actually cause damage rather than helping maintain your conservatory. Make sure you use basic and non-abrasive materials so as to not risk causing any damage while cleaning, often simply using warm soapy water is all you will need and a rinse afterwards.
Consider your own safety if cleaning your own conservatory. Never stand on the roof. Make use of a sturdy ladder and extendable tools. If you are not confident that you can manage to carry out the cleaning yourself, consider looking for a local company that can come out and help with the maintenance.
Locks & Hinges
An occasional maintenance of the locks & hinges should be sufficient for your conservatory. A light lubricant used sparingly should help to keep any moving parts of the conservatory working as intended. Be careful to avoid any such products getting onto other parts of the conservatory.
